Language Arts: The first grade StoryTown series provides learning opportunities in phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, writing and grammar. Students will take part in weekly reading, spelling and fluency assessments throughout the school year. At the completion of first grade, students are expected to read between 50-70 words per minute.
Additionally, students will take part in a new program this year called Fundations. This program focuses on developing strong skills in phonological/phonemic awareness, phonics and spelling. Math: My Math, by McGraw-Hill, was designed to meet the new Common Core State Standards. In first grade, students will focus on four Common Core domains. These domains include: operations and algebraic thinking, number and operations in base ten, measurement and data and geometry. With this new series, we do not have a separate homework book. Therefore, math homework papers will come home in your child’s take-home folder. Please complete the homework assignment with your child, initial the bottom of the paper and return the homework to school the following day. |
